Interventional Cardiology

Healthy FoodWe often hear about certain foods increasing our risk for heart disease, such as those laden with saturated fats (butter, bacon, and fatty cuts of beef come to mind). But preventing heart disease is more than just avoiding the risky foods; it's about including the heart healthy foods. The American Heart Association recommends a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains. Healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and olives are encouraged as well.

The human body needs some fat to function properly, we just need to make sure it's healthy monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat (olive oil has a high content of monounsaturated fat). It's recommended that you substitute butter and other saturated fats in your diet with MUFA's like olive oil.

For an interesting article on this topic, click here and see what Dr. Antonis Pothoulakis thinks about it. He is an Interventional Cardiologist who says that, "Olive oil can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke."

Baking with Olive Oil

Baking with Olive OilHave you tried replacing your butter or margarine with olive oil in your baking recipes yet? If not, then there is no better time to give it a shot than now. The holiday season brings with it a tradition of baking dozens of cookies, cakes, and pies. Using olive oil in lieu of butter or margarine is a healthier choice, as olive oil is a monounsaturated fat.

MUFA's are much better for your heart health than the artery clogging saturated fats like butter. Olive oil is also completely natural, and not processed with various chemicals like margarine is. Besides being heart friendly, baking with olive oil is simply delicious. The texture is light, the flavor is rich, and oh is it moist! The conversion chart for butter or margarine to olive oil can be found here.

Here's a unique and tasty recipe to try for baking with olive oil. It's a perfect complement to all those pies on your Thanksgiving dessert table. Olive Oil & Spiced Butternut Squash Bundt Cake With Bourbon Vanilla Glaze.

Safe Storing of Olive Oil

Storing Olive OilThe oil you purchase at D'Avolio is some of the freshest around, so you'll want to store it properly at home to keep it that way. Light, heat, and air are the three main culprits that deteriorate your oil, so the following tips are to help minimize exposure to them. Firstly, keep your oil in the dark bottle it came in to prevent light exposure. Those classy dark bottles serve a bigger purpose than just to look pretty.

Secondly, you should keep your oil at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. Storing it too close to a heat source, such as your stove or near a window that absorbs the hot afternoon sun may contribute to rancidity. Thirdly, keep your oil tightly sealed. Using the original caps or TAPI pourer on your bottle will help prevent exposure to air.

Lastly, and we don't think any of you will have a problem with this one, but make sure to use your oil within a year. Most of you probably go through your bottles within a month, so this likely isn't an issue! Just follow these tips and your D'Avolio oil will stay delicious to the last drop.

3 - Sandwich Day

Sandwich Day is a celebration of one of America's favorite foods: the sandwich! It is no coincidence that November 3 is also the birthday of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. This 18th century English noble wanted to eat his meal with one hand during a 24-hour gambling event, so he instructed his servants to serve him his lunchmeat between two slices of bread. D'Avolio offers its own take on this day with The Ploughman Sandwich.
